It's no secret that we love to focus on getting as much natural light in our homes as possible. So while you may enjoy the sun shining in your big front picture window, there are also times when pulling the curtains closed is exactly what you need. That is just one of the many reasons why every home needs window treatments.

One of the most exciting things about interior design is that it's always evolving and innovating. If you're an avid reader of Freshome, you already know that there is constantly a hot new home design trend making its way through Pinterest boards and design blogs. As exciting as that is, it also means that if you choose to incorporate fashionable items into your home's design, it's a good bet that at some point they will grow antiquated.

On the second floor, the floor-to-ceiling patio door and a skylight on one side both allow light to bound in. The central staircase is open so there no hallway walls close off the light. (Only simple white handrails mirror the geometry of the split floor layout.) And, the wood ceilings and interior windows make it seem as spacious and wondrous to look up as it is to look down.

Adding Black to the Mix A great way to bring the modern dining room in neutral hues to life, even while using a wooden dining table, is to turn to black. Black anchors these breezy dining rooms, accentuates the key features of the dining space and also allows the dining table to shine through. This can be done using pendant lights, chairs around the wooden table or a classy, dark tabletop itself. Using darker tones of wood for the dining table and chairs next to it also adds to its dramatic aura and turns the table into the focal point of the room.

Fall holidays are all about celebrating nature‘s bounty, so take your cues from the vibrant leaves outside. Plus, this season‘s top hues are more understated than radiant, so use them freely without the worry of overwhelming your table.

A Vivacious Splash of Color One of the great advantages of a tropical dining room is the wide range of colors that you can turn to without feeling that it is all too gaudy. Even though the contemporary trend is to keep the backdrop neutral and add bright accent hues, tropical dining rooms can conveniently and effortlessly break this stereotype. A dash of turquoise coupled with white and pops of red, green and yellow does usher in a cool and fun tropical flavor that is inspired by the endless beaches and amazing wildlife of the Caribbean and its surrounding region.
